In the article, Farah Obaidullah argues why a moratorium on deep-sea mining is the only responsible way forward and calls on the Netherlands to join the 41 other nations already supporting a moratorium or pause on this reckless emerging industry.
She also urges the Dutch government to hold the Dutch-Swiss company AllSeas to account should they undermine international law. The piece highlights AllSeas’ partnership with the company most aggressively pushing to open the High Seas, the ocean beyond borders, to mining. Obaidullah notes concerns that they appear prepared to work with the United States, which has decided unilaterally to mine the global ocean. The article argues that the only way forward for the shared planet is through a rules-based order rooted in science, caution, Indigenous wisdom, collaboration, and moral clarity.
